CLEVELAND, Ohio – Area baseball teams are in the last full week of the regular season. Come Monday, the OHSAA playoffs begin with sectional games.
Here are the region’s top matches scheduled for May 11-17.
⦁ Amherst vs. Avon at Crushers Stadium, 4:45 p.m. Wednesday: The Eagles clinched the Southwest Conference title on Monday with a 4-1 win over Amherst. The two will meet once again for a playoff tune-up. Can the Comets ruin their rival’s SWC title celebration? That game was moved to Mercy Health Stadium in Avon, home of the Lake Erie Crushers.
⦁ Aurora at Revere, Thursday 5 p.m.: The Aurora Bats last came in a 10-5 victory on April 29 against the Minutemen, seeking a Suburban League title in the American Division while running with Barberton and Tallmadge. Wadsworth has already won the National Division with a 7-1 win Monday at North Royalton.
⦁ Tallmadge at Barberton, 5 p.m. Thursday: Speaking of the Blue Devils and Magics, they reunite after Tallmadge’s 4-3 win the first time around.
⦁ Mayfield at Lake Avon, 5 p.m. Friday: A non-conference tune-up for the Division I tournament kicks off for these two teams, as Mayfield makes the trip from the east side. Avon Lake has matchups with the Wildcats, who reached regionals last year, and a trip to Walsh Jesuit within 24 hours. They visit the Warriors at 1 p.m. Saturday.
⦁ Rocky River at Benedictine, 5 p.m. Monday: The Bengals just saw pitchers AJ Slemc and Max Young combine Monday for a tie against Firestone. They will help the Bengals open the Division II tournament as the 23rd seed against 24th seed Rocky River. The winner will travel to Cloverleaf on Wednesday May 18 in the Richfield district.
⦁ Notre Dame-Latin Cathedral in Streetsboro, 5 p.m. Monday: Charleston’s commitment and senior shortstop Samuel Slodic leads the Lions, the No. 18 seed in the Division II district of Louisville, to the No. 12 seed Streetsboro. The winner will travel to the Beloit West branch on May 18.
⦁ Solon at Mayfield, 5 p.m. Tuesday: Mayfield is looking to rekindle the magic of last year’s Division I regional run, and that quest begins with a talented Solon team from the Greater Cleveland Conference. The winner will travel to eight-seeded Riverside on Thursday, May 19 in a Division I Macedonia district sectional final.
⦁ Brecksville-Broadview Heights in Amherst, 5 p.m. Tuesday: Both teams played in two of the toughest conferences in the region, with the Bees in the Suburban League and the Comets in the Southwestern Conference. Both are talented and the winner will face No. 11 North Ridgeville or John Marshall on May 19 in a Brunswick District Division I Sectional Final.
