Shelby NC baseball stadium could get more upgrades

In preparation for the 2022 American Legion World Series, the American Legion is exploring several new updates to Keeter Stadium at Shelby High School.

“State House of Representatives Speaker Tim Moore was able to get us a grant through Travel and Tourism so that we could explore some improvements to the stadium,” said Eddie Holbrook, local chairman of the state. American Legion World Series.

American Legion Word Series is looking to expand the shaded canopy on the first and third base lines of the field and add more tall fans to that canopy to keep baseball fans cool in the August sun.

The organization is also looking to improve the lights under which players play. Funds permitting, Holbrook said the stadium will see LED lights installed in the outfield ahead of this year’s series.

The American Legion World Series has made several upgrades to the stadium over the years.

“Not only does it give you brighter light, but our current lights are about the minimum (acceptable) for television,” he said.

If the World Series can install new lights in the stadium, the existing lights would be moved to the tennis courts at Shelby High School.

Holbrook said there are no cost estimates for the planned upgrades yet.

“We’re still waiting for bids from contractors to see how much this is all going to cost,” he said. “We should know those numbers in the next few weeks.”

All work done on Keeter Stadium and Veterans Field is paid for by the American Legion World Series. If the series is able to move forward with improvements to the stadium, work should begin in the spring and be completed by mid-summer.
