Five high school baseball teams in the Northwest Houston area were highlighted in statewide preseason polls ahead of the 2022 season.

Four baseball teams were ranked in Texas High School Baseball Magazine’s public and private preseason polls, while another team was featured in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association preseason poll.

TAPPS Division I’s Concordia Lutheran is the highest-ranked baseball team in Texas High School Baseball Magazine’s top 20 private preseason major schools.

The Crusaders suffered a 1-0 loss to Midland Christian in last year’s TAPPS Division 1 State Championship game in Waco.

However, six starters return from the state runner-up team, including senior pitcher and outfielder Sean Fitzpatrick and senior pitcher and infielder Jax Traeger.

Fitzpatrick is committed to Arkansas and was named a first-team all-state selection after posting a .754 ERA with 85 strikeouts. Traeger is a TCU commitment and was named to the second team all-state after going 5-2 with a 1.81 ERA.

Plano John Paul II (TAPPS D1) is ranked No. 2 in the top 20 preseason big schools, followed by Central Catholic (TAPPS D1), Second Baptist and South Christian (TAPPS D2).

The rest of the top 10 includes Nolan Catholic (TAPPS D1), Midland Christian (TAPPS D1), Kinkaid (SPC South), Lutheran South (TAPPS D2) and Cornerstone Christian (TCAF D1).

TAPPS Division 3’s Cypress Christian is ranked No. 2 in Texas High School Baseball Magazine’s top 10 small private preseason schools behind No. 1 Bay Area Christian.

The Warriors were one win away from advancing to the state semifinals last year, but suffered an 8-6 loss to John Paul II in the regional round.

Cy Christian is bringing back eight starters from the 2020-21 Regional Finalists squad, including senior pitcher Cole Wisenbaker and senior infielder and outfielder Jackson Braun.

Wisenbaker is committed to Kansas State, the reigning district MVP and was named to the all-state first team. Braun is a Paris JC clerk and also earned All-State First-Team honors.

Two Cy-Fair ISD teams have been ranked in Texas High School Baseball Magazine’s Class 6A Preseason Top 20.

Bridgeland outside District 16-6A in Region II is ranked No. 13 and Jersey Village outside District 17-6A in Region III is two places behind at No. 15.

Bridgeland went 29-9-1 on aggregate last year, finishing the season as regional quarter-finalists after losing 2-0 to Tomball High in a best-of-three series.

The Bears will fire five starters, including senior pitcher and outfielder and TCU commitment Murphy Brooks and senior receiver and Mississippi State commitment Ryan Williams.

Jersey Village went 23-19-1 on aggregate in 2020-21, going five rounds deep before being swept by Strake Jesuit 2-0 in the regional final.

The Falcons will bring back seven starters, including senior pitcher and infielder Armando Rocha, the reigning district MVP and senior outfielder Dominic Padilla.

Southlake Carroll is ranked No. 1 ahead of Rockwall, Katy Tompkins, Rockwall-Heath and Lake Travis. Prosper is next at No. 6, followed by Smithson Valley, Marcus, Strake Jesuit and Cinco Ranch.

District 15-6A’s Tomball High in Region II is ranked No. 9 in the THSBCA 6A preseason poll, rounding out the top 10.

The Cougars went 28-12-1 last year, finishing the season as regional semifinalists after suffering a 2-1 loss to Rockwall-Heath. They’ll bring back about half a dozen starters, including senior shortstop and pitcher Chase Mora.

Rockwall-Heath is ranked No. 1 in the THSBCA rankings, followed by Southlake Carroll, Tompkins, SA Reagan and Rockwall.
