Bluefield Baseball Club Announces New Team Name Today | Sports

BLUEFIELD – Today at Bowen Field, the Bluefield Baseball Club is set to announce the official name of the new Bluefield baseball team that will begin playing this summer in the completely restructured Appalachian League.

Bluefield Baseball Club was previously affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays during the Appalachian League rookie days, which ended with Major League Baseball’s contraction of minor leagues last year. Prior to the arrival of the Blue Jays, the Baltimore Orioles hosted a team at Bluefield. While it lasted, it was the oldest association between a major league organization and a community of all minor league baseball.

The restructured Appalachian League will no longer use signed pro talent, but will store its rosters with elite college baseball players who are not yet signed as pro.

The reveal is expected to take place at a press conference to be held at Bowen Field at 11 a.m. today.

Some of the names of the new teams already revealed include the Greeneville Flyboys, Bristol State-Liners, Kingsport Axmen, Johnson City Doughboys, Elizabethton River Riders and Pulaski River Turtles.

Princeton, which was previously affiliated with the Tampa Bay Rays rookie club, is expected to follow suit with the reveal of its name in the near future.
